Current Version: 7.0.73.0 (December 18, 2007) / 9.0.124.0 (April 9, 2008)

Adobe's Flash Player is perhaps the most ubiquitous Web browser plug-in of all, allowing you to view all kinds of nice interactive animations many people have produced for their Web sites.

Version 7 is the final version of Flash Player that will be produced for "Classic" Mac OS. Starting with the release of the December 18, 2007 security bulletin, APSB07-20, Adobe is discontinuing support of Adobe Flash Player 7 and will no longer provide security updates. Adobe recommends that all Flash Player users on supported systems update to the most recent version of the player through the Flash Player Download Center. Adobe's support policy for Flash Player is to support the current and previous major release. Flash Player 7 was updated with security fixes as a courtesy to customers on Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft NT, and Macintosh Classic operating systems, and for Linux and Solaris customers prior to the availability of Flash Player 9.

Version 9.0.124.0 (the latest release for Mac OS X) fixes the following issues:

  • A media streaming security vulnerability was fixed in both Flash Player and Flash Media Server. As a result, Flash Media Interactive Server 3 and Flash Media Streaming Server 3 customers who are streaming H.264 content to Flash Player 9.0.124.0 or higher will need to upgrade their server to version 3.0.1.
  • When html/SWF is in the local sandbox, getURL('javascript:.....') calls fail with Flash Player 9.0.115.0 in IE7. These calls will no longer fail in 9.0.124.0.
  • A run-time warning has been added to the debug player in version 9.0.124.0 to reflect that AllowScriptAccess="never" has been deprecated.
  • Full-screen playback shows black triangles in Flash Player 9.0.115.0 on ATI cards on Microsoft Vista.
  • Authorization header has been reinstated in Flash Player 9.0.124.0.

Beta:
Version 10.0.1 b218 is available for Mac OS X 10.4 (Carbon / Universal) (May 16, 2008), adding/changing the following:

  • 3D Effects - Easily transform and animate any display object through 3D space while retaining full interactivity. Fast, lightweight, and native 3D effects make motion that was previously reserved for expert users available to everyone. Complex effects are simple with APIs that extend what you already know.
  • Custom Filters and Effects - Create your own portable filters, blend modes, and fills using Adobe Pixel Bender, the same technology used for many After Effects CS3 filters. Shaders in Flash Player are about 1KB and can be scripted and animated at runtime.
  • Advanced Text Layout - A new, highly flexible text layout engine, co-existing with TextField, enables innovation in creating new text controls by providing low-level access to text offering right-to-left and vertical text layout, plus support for typographic elements like ligatures.
  • Enhanced Drawing API - Runtime drawing is easier and more powerful with re-styleable properties, 3D APIs, and a new way of drawing sophisticated shapes without having to code them line by line.
  • Visual Performance Improvements - Applications and videos will run smoother and faster with expanded use of hardware acceleration. By moving several visual processing tasks to the video card, the CPU is free to do more.
